Best of Animé 2011 [Day 2] . . .

I only visit conventions once in a while and I have to have a good reason before doing such.

My original plan was to meetup with a cosplay-buddy to get my commissioned items but since he had personal things to take care of then our meetup was cancelled. Still, I decided to go because I also promised my little sister that I would accompany her in looking for the manga  that she wanted. I also thought that it would be a great opportunity for me to search for Gothic pendants which are very elusive in regular stores.

MOA is a relatively large place and I don’t frequently go there so I get lost easily. It’s a good thing that I know and I had spotted the right people to follow —- the nerds! We followed their lead without them noticing and after a few minutes, we were already in front of SMX. LoL!

I was surprised that the hall was quite empty even though it’s the middle of the day. The first thing that we did was roam around and looked for manga. Unfortunately, there was none. We only found magazines, pirated DVDs and other customized memorabilia. The only booth that had manga was that of Japan Foundation. My little sister decided to stay there while I roam around some more.

The shops that had a wide variety of merchandise truly caught my attention. I bought a nice Harajuku polo from Sugarfree and Blue. I’ll wear it the next time I attend a convention. It was also nice seeing the Gothic and Lolita communities broadening in the country. I also bought a cross pendant and a customized mug.

I didn’t bother taking photos of cosplayers because they didn’t appeal much to me. I did spend time taking photographs of figma and nendroids, though.

One of the things that I regret is my being an otaku. I’ve either thrown or given away most of my comic books and art books but I kept a select few since they are of most value (for me).

Culture Crash is one of the first (if not the first) successful animé-style comic book published locally. It's a downer that they discontinued publishing due to lack of funds. My favorites are "Cat's Trail" and "One Day Isang Diwa". I've collected Volumes 1-15. Vol1 is missing from the photo since someone borrowed but never returned it. Vol 5.5 was signed by Michael V and the whole CC crew.

I was addicted to RAGNARÖK, a MMORPG based on this manhwa (Korean comics). That addiction also led to my desire of reading the story behind that game. My ex-boyfriend gave me Volumes 1-8 (TokyoPop print). When our relationship ended, I bought Volumes 9-10 (locally printed). LoL! Myoung-Jin Lee discontinued publishing the manhwa since he concentrated on creating artworks for the game. Boohoo~

RAGNARÖK FANART COLLECTION VOL.1 :: This is one of my most-prized possessions because... (1) This is one of the prizes I got for winning the "War of Emperium" fanart contest (2) This was signed by Myoung-Jin Lee (creator of the manhwa and one of my favorite artists) (3) This is me blowing a raspberry at Alodia and friend who kept mocking my artwork but didn't win hehe~ >:)

Juicy contents~! I envy those people whose artworks got published T_T

When Central Comic Headquarters (CCHQ) opened, I just knew that I needed to check the titles that they have. I was supposed to get Weiß Kreuz art books but they were so expensive so I settled for Valkyrie Profile. These are original manga based on the game of the same title. It only has two volumes and a lot of characters from the game are missing. Regardless, the story was captured and the artwork is superb!

Before we moved out from Caloocan, one of my childhood buddies gave me a BETTY AND VERONICA comic book (that's the crumpled one on the upper left). After that, I started collecting some more copies. Although, I didn't really like it that much since it's all comedy and lacked substance.

The DARKMINDS comics were lent to me by my late James-sempai (first ever local Lupin cosplayer). I never had a chance to return these to him since he was murdered in UP Diliman. I keep these with me as a memento that there was once a devoted otaku who treated me like his beloved little sister.

I was once a collector of QUESTOR. However, I found the Internet much more useful and much cheaper than buying a printed medium. I'm only keeping this copy since it has the editors' signatures and Weiß Kreuz was their featured animé.

Shueisha is Against Scanlations . . .

Shueisha (株式会社集英社)
recently announced their concern regarding illegal copies of manga overflowing on the Internet, known to many overseas fans as "scanlations"

IMHO, scanlations are like a double-edged sword. It can either make or break the animé and manga industries.

I am a supporter of scanlations mainly because I don't know much Nihongo. I also don't have money to shell out for either the Shounen JUMP nor TokyoPop versions of the manga I like.

However, I respect all manga-ka and I know the feeling of being plagiarized so I will support their endeavors.

Translation (credits to OneManga) :

To all our readers

There are now many people unjustly posting copies of manga on the internet. These unjust copies are inconsistent with mangakas' feelings. They are also distorting the authors' intentions of "I want the work to be read this way". The actions of posting these unjust copies on the net, into which the mangakas have poured their hearts, are not only hurting mangakas in real life but are also against the law, even if done in a light-hearted manner.

Every time we discover such "unjust copies", we talk to the mangaka and consider every possible countermeasure. But the number of inconsiderate people is great, and at present we cannot deal with all of them. We have a request for all our readers.

The unjust internet copies are deeply hurting the manga culture, mangakas' rights, and even mangakas' souls. Please understand once again that all of that is against the law. Also, the mangakas and Shueisha will severely deal with any unjust copies found on the internet. We ask that our readers please continue to support us.

Trip to Enchanted Kingdom – OtakonEK 2009 ! ! !

Event : OtakonEK 2009
Date : October 18, 2009
Venue : Enchanted Kingdom

Last year, I said that OtakonEK will be my pilgrimage because Azrael confirmed that this will happen every September. OtakonEK was a bit postponed this year due to typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana) [link, viewable by family & friends only], which hit the country a day before its actual date. I also thought that I won’t be able to attend because of my work’s schedule. As if luck was really on my side, I had an acute laryngitis which became my excuse for skipping our shift. Even without a voice, I can still have fun!!! Dada was against it at first but when I explained to him that I have been planning this for the longest, he then allowed me to go. Wheee!!!

Jeiro and Lora went to EK wearing Pirate costumes while Leidi and I were just wearing casual clothes. I planned on donning the Scarlet gown [link], but I realized that it would be too cumbersome and I don’t want to pose for pictures there (yeah, I have issues).

Leidi and I missed both the 10:30AM and 12:30NN shuttles so we had to commute going to Sta.Rosa, Laguna. I was thinking that if something else goes wrong or if we get lost, we might not make it to EK! During those times, I realized that people can either be complete @$$h073S or be very helpful to the needy. Some people took advantage of the situation and charged us too high for fares, while some are very kind to point us the fastest routes and tell us the actual rates.

We arrived in EK around 1:30PM and immediately stashed our bags in the locker area. Leidi was a bit reminiscing because she said that the last time she’s been there was when she was ten. It was time for her to feel the thrills of the rides she missed during her elementary years! LOL!

1) Roller Skater (mini roller coaster) — Leidi wanted to try Dodgem (bump cars) but I told her that it’s too boring so as an appetizer, I took her here. I think she had fun. Hehe~

2) Anchor’s Away (swaying pirate ship) — The line was pretty long and we waited for about 10 minutes before our turn. While standing in line, Leidi felt scared as she heard the screams and wanted to back out. I firmly told her “NO! We are going to take the topmost seats! You see blood everyday [you’re a nurse-to-be!] and you can’t handle this?!” Hehehe~ Of course, people go to EK to experience the thrills and I want nothing less. While the ship was swaying back and forth, Leidi got really scared at tinawag na niya ang lahat ng mga santo! LoL! She screamed “OH MY GOD -TAMA NA – SHET – ANG PUSO KO – LORD – OPERATOR – STOP – AAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!!” all in one breath! LoL!

3) Grand Carousel – no lines, I wonder why? LoL!

4) Flying Fiesta (wave swinger) – Leidi said that if she survived Anchor’s Away, she can survive anything! LoL!

5) Wheel of Fate (giant ferris wheel) – it was our time to relax a bit and enjoy the view.

6) Rialto (motion sim theater – feat. Speed Racer) – if my reaction to Sponge Bob was “That was it?!” for Speed Racer it was “What the fn(K”?!”

7) Jungle Log Jam (log flumes) – We didn’t get wet. It was still cold, though.

8) Rio Grande Rapids (river rafting) – We were VEERRRRYYYYYY WET! LoL!

Despite the fact that we arrived late, we still managed to try out eight rides. This is my best record as of late. LoL! The Space Shuttle is undergoing maintenance so Leidi wasn’t able to feel what it’s like being the signature ride of EK. Nonetheless, we’re able to watch the Sky Wizard fireworks display contest. The entry that we liked was #11.

We got home around 12:30MN. Cold and tired, but we had fun. LOL!
